Painting as the Composition of Tanka
The bedrock of my practice is a confrontation with "Existential Isolation"—a realization I faced in my twenties that one’s own consciousness is the only provable reality. Since the inner worlds of others are inherently unobservable, I view superficial interaction as an insufficient bridge. My mission is to visualize emotion, the most primal element of the self, to trigger a sympathetic resonance within the viewer. I believe this resonance is the only definitive proof of my existence and the only way to connect with others at a profound, sub-linguistic level
My work builds upon Mark Rothko’s pursuit of "basic human emotions"—the transmission of tragedy, ecstasy, and the universal spirit. However, the "pure abstraction" of the mid-20th century often demands a specific spiritual readiness from the viewer, risking an exclusionary form of communication. I seek a more functional "access point"—an interface for society akin to the "Emblems" in Hirotaka Tobi’s speculative fiction: geometric forms engineered to evoke specific emotional movements.
Thus, I maintain representation as a gateway, presenting the canvas as an interface for spiritual resonance. Drawing from Edgar Degas’s photographic compositions and the visceral, linear intensity of Maurice de Vlaminck and Saeki Yuzo, I attempt to fix pathos within the landscape . By stripping away redundant realism and condensing the image into deliberate color planes, I navigate the boundary between the representational and the abstract—an approach that is neither purely descriptive nor self-indulgent.
I define this methodology as "Painting as if composing a Tanka." Just as a thirty-one-syllable poem maximizes information density within extreme constraints, I purify emotion through minimal lines and colors. I intentionally design "Ma" —the meaningful void to be completed by the viewer’s imagination. For me, a painting is a communication protocol: a process of distilling subjective passion into objective visual data to generate a shared resonance with the world.
As an illustrator, this pursuit of resonance remains my guiding principle. Acting as a "director of narratives," I shift the locus of expression from my "self" to the "story." I select motifs that best encapsulate the subject’s pathos, assimilating the perspective of characters or narrators to visualize their internal lives. While my role shifts, the process remains a form of prayer in every brushstroke, seeking a visual composition that acts deeply upon the viewer’s inner self. My commitment to this craft is fueled by a sincere desire to connect with a wider audience through these shared emotional landscapes.
